Nice Marmot Films is a Vermont-based production company dedicated to the craft of documentary filmmaking. Amidst a cultural conversation often reduced to headlines and soundbites, we strive to create films with nuance and empathy that foster human connection.

Our name is derived from a particularly funny yet very niche quote from our favorite movie, The Big Lebowski. Like a well-timed wink, inside jokes provide a moment of shared understanding. And that’s what we’re all about.
APPROACH
“What is most personal is most universal.”
Carl R. Rogers
Film is unique in its ability to connect people. In a moment we can transcend our reality and step into another person’s world. We take large, complex narratives and boil them down to their essence—identifying characters whose stories illuminate larger truths, and following their journeys with the grit and patience one can only learn from the trenches of indie doc filmmaking.
“I’ll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours.”
Bob Dylan
Filmmaking is inherently collaborative—a dance of story, picture, sound, color, music and feeling that finds its groove with a good team. We leverage a core network of creatives with years of experience working together, and bring in new voices and perspectives to create work that speaks to all.
“Proceed as the way opens.”
Peter Lourie
Our films aren’t told so much as revealed. We’ve found that the story will often tell you what a film wants to look and feel like, and as a result each of our projects has a unique vibe. Yet what remains constant is that our subjects, clients and fellow creatives are a central part of our creative process. We lean into long-term creative collaborations, and adapt our approach as each story evolves.
